Site Build It! Diary, Day 1
With Daniel raving about how great Site Build It! is, I decided to go ahead and try it for myself. I'm already a very successful independent contractor working from home, but one thing that I have noticed about my business is that it is still a "time for money" model. That's not necessarily bad. I love what I do, and even though almost every guru tells you to get out of that model as quick as you can, if you love what you do and would do it anyway there's no sense not getting paid for it. That said, there is a sort of sine-wave up and down effect to my income that can be very stressful, to the point where I pay my bills 2-3 months in advance sometimes. Sometimes, I find that's cutting it close, too. There's also the fact that I'm limited by the number of hours I can day that I can work. I've hired employees, but sometimes that's more trouble than it's worth. I have only one employee who can be trusted to do the job and do it well without major supervision on my part. And I found that the leverage gain I've gotten off of them, at least in the broken model I put together, wasn't entirely worth it. Leveraging people, therefore, may not be my style. So my goal with Site Build It is to create something that I can leverage. Something that will make a steady income for me while I do other things.
My hope is to take this thing to being the primary payer of bills, and then my other work can be for savings, college savings for my daughter, house down payments, and more fun things like luxury vacations. My goal is to have the website that I build create enough cash to even pay (gasp) for a health insurance policy, which I do not currently have.
I'm telling you my goals because I think it's very important, before you start any work from home venture, to understand exactly what you want out of it. Why is it getting a portion of your time? What will you do with it? Why do you want to do it? That's because in any business there are setbacks. I need that in front of me to combat the setbacks when I see them. I'm just that way. I also need to know what I want to accomplish something so that it gets enough priority in my to-do list to get done. My services are popular enough that I sometimes have quite the extensive little list, and I often worry I won't get through it in a day. But I think this is worth pursuing.
So, Day 1. You'll be brought to a series of introductory videos or information to read. I recommend the videos as I retained that a lot better, but I looked over the reading material to be certain that I didn't miss anything or forget to watch anything in the Day 1 video. I now understand a great deal about Site Build It's philosophy of making money--how it works, why it works. This has given me a good foundation to trust the rest of their steps. I haven't put a single thing on a website yet, or chosen a domain. In point of fact, I've now learned those things won't happen till Day 5 or Day 6. More importantly, I've learned why those things don't happen right away. Suddenly several of my failed website launches make a heck of a lot more sense.
By the way, if you've been fence-sitting too now is a good time to take some action. Normally, with Site Build It, you have to plunk down $299 to get started. They have introduced their new "recession buster" option, which allows you to pay $29.99 a month. They do beg you to be committed before you begin, though, and I can't blame them. This will take commitment. But if you have any passion at all in your life, I'm confident that they can help you turn it into a viable business. I can't wait to get to the brainstorming phase and start solidifying my idea.
