Site Build It! Diary, Day 2, Part 2
So now you know my dirty little secret--I take the weekends off. From everything, including ventures that I'm doing myself vs. ventures that another company is paying me to do.
Still, today I was back at Site Build it working with the Brainstorm It! tool. The purpose of this tool is to help you get an idea of the basic economics on the sites you're considering: in short, the supply and demand idea behind the site you want to build. You put in 3 seed words and get 10 pages worth of keyword list to sort through and evaluate.
Here's what I've learned:
1. What you think of when you say a word is not necessarily what the rest of the world is thinking of. I like fantasy fiction a la Lord of the Rings, so one of my site concepts was a fantasy book review site. I made the mistake of typing in "fantasy" and nothing but when I was using the tool, and discovered that fantasy has a whole range of meanings I never ever considered.
2. There are more specialties and subniches of any given niche then you can imagine. And you won't have to evaluate every one. I've eliminated a page's worth of keywords with the delete function on the basis of my total lack of interest in or knowledge about them. It is an amusing exercise, but it will start my day off tomorrow. Fortunately Site Build it saves all of it for me so I can go back to the task of throwing out all the garbage words tomorrow. (Garbage for me. Maybe gold for you).
3. You'll get an analysis of supply, demand, and potential profits as well as a quick-search that can take you to competitor websites in order to see what's out there.
They were not kidding when they said Day 2 can take a long time to accomplish!
They also point out that you can get to the end of the process and still not have a very good site concept. If that is the case, they encourage you to go right ahead and try again. I am hoping, however, that I've hit this out of the gate the first time. I'm impatient to move on to the next steps!
